P-1 Visa Length of Potential Visa Issuance

The P-1 visa is very useful for athletes as well as entertainment groups. This article considers the length of time a P-1 visa is valid for.

The length granted to a beneficiary on a P-1 visa depends on whether the P-1 is being granted to an individual athlete, a sports team, or an entertainment groups such as a band.

A P-1 visa for an individual athlete can be granted by USCIS for up 5 years at a time with a 5 year extension available beyond that. If the P-1 visa holder wishes to apply for a P visa beyond the ten years that can be done however the application will have to consular process. P-1 visas granted to sports teams or entertainment groups however are only granted in increments of 1 year with 1 year extensions thereafter.

When admitted on a P visa, the spouse and other qualifying dependents may only be admitted for the same period as the principal.
